  1. FIRE --

  3. in Alaska is both boon and bane. For centuries, nature
  4. has used fire as one means of creating new browse hab-
  5. itat for wildlife.  Today, wildlife managers judicious-
  6. ly follow that lead. Thus you may see, on your travels,
  7. areas of Alaska which have been subjected to prescribed
  8. burning in order to benefit the widlife which use the
  9. habitat. On the other hand, uncontrolled, non-prescrip-
  10. tion fire is dangerous to human life and property, as
  11. well as to wildlife and its habitat. And wildlife fires
  12. can be economically devestating. The of fighting wild-
  13. land fires in remote Alaska is high; not to mention the
  14. loss of saleable timber. Fire can be sparked easily in
  15. dense undergrowth. And, even when it appears to be out,
  16. a fire can be smoldering in ground cover, only to erupt
  17. in flames hours or even days later.  Please observe all
  18. safety rules for campfires; be sure your fires & smokes
  19. are dead out, and check with the Alaska Division of For-
  20. estry or the USDA Forest Service before conducting any
  21. uncontained burning during Alaska's fire season -- from
  22. May 1 through October 1.
